Those Stubborn Dutch

When I was in college at BYU in the mid-1970s a Dutch friend, Elly, came from Holland to visit my wife and me. It was her second of several trips to the US. On this trip Elly brought along her friend, Trudy—an elementary school teacher. Like many Dutch people, both Trudy and Elly speak English very well. Though I speak Dutch most of our conversations were in English so that my wife wouldn’t feel left out.

One evening at dinner we were discussing the fact that the Dutch are not only stubborn but that they’re also proud of their stubbornness. Elly and Trudy agreed completely. At one point in the conversation I stated, “Besides being stubborn the Dutch are also very outspoken.”

Trudy immediately slammed her opened palm down on the table with a startling bang. “Now that is NOT TRUE!” Trudy exclaimed. “If there’s ONE THING about us Dutch people it’s that we never let ANYONE outspeak us!”

I thanked Trudy for proving my point.

Poetry
Stumbling upon the following site is like discovering Ali Baba’s cave. Prodigious riches from poets both famous and obscure can be found here. Some of my favorites are included: Jane Kenyon, Emily Dickinson, William Carlos Williams, Naomi Shihab Nye, Antonio Machado, William Butler Yates, Ogden Nash, and Li-Young Lee. Alas, Lynda Hull is not represented here.
